I was given this last minute task of advertising the play and the endless admin matters that followed, all to be done in a week. i was so stressed out due to time constraint, common test markings and teachers day rehearsal.
But 2 days ago, it finally happened and i'm glad the kids enjoyed it. Really thankful to Samsiah and Raymond who helped me out as accompanying teachers.
The play was hilarious, as expected, though it was full of hokkien vulgarities (the language context of army days). Our kids of course had a good laugh and they sometimes turned behind to look at our reactions when these "taboo words" popped up on stage. Haha. Raymond tried quite hard to look serious but Samsiah and i just couldn't stop laughing.
The cast was awesome. i felt that Auntie Lucy was there as a familiar comic figure but undoubtedly funny. Chua Enlai was the stereotypical corporal who couldn't speak proper English. i thought that Siti Khalijah was really good, especially as the Filipino maid.
And all the recruits transformed into pink uniform maids who danced around with pillows. Imagine the drastic change from this...
My fave characters out of the recruits would be Teo Ah Beng, the typical Chao Ah Beng and Kenny Pereira, the Chao Ah Gua.
A lot of jokes are inside references that only Singaporeans would understand, so it may come across as insensitive or a big question mark to foreigners. Nonetheless, i think that's the whole point of Army Daze - a play that Singaporeans are able to connect with.
I would give 5 out of 5 popcorns for this.
